hugh ‘redman’ james is one of the greatest jamaican music producers of the late 1980s. raised in a musical household in the west kingston slum of hannah town, with his mother a sound system selector, redman gained his initial schooling in the music business from none other than king tubby, the legendary sound system owner and dub mixer that was responsible for voicing and mixing some of the greatest reggae of all time. after being immersed in sound system culture during his youth in the 1960s and 70s, redman began sitting in on sessions at king tubby’s studio, but migrated to hartford, connecticut in 1978 in search of steady employment. returning to jamaica a few years later, he established a popular sound system in kingston and began producing music with king tubby’s assistance in 1985, working with the roots radics during a time of great uncertainty in jamaican music, as the new dancehall style came to prominence, early work featured gregory isaacs, sugar minott and frankie paul, as well as rising stars such as little john and horace martin. then, following the computerisation of dancehall, redman began producing some of the most popular music of the day, crafting durable and complex rhythms with a broad team of players that included steely and clevie, augmented by members of the browne bunch and other players. redman helped establish a number of total unknowns in this era, including carl meeks, dave bailey and wayne palmer, and became a serious contender for king jammy’s crown. but the producer was ultimately frustrated by the dramatic changes to sweep jamaican music in the early 1990s, and subsequently retreated from the music industry redman international dancehall 1985-1989 compiles the best work from his glory days, with half of the twelve vocal tracks coming complete with corresponding dub versions.

finally the long-awaited second series of invisible family outings has arrived.label boss and compiler gk machine has this to say beyond ecstatic to get these tracks out. the gazeebo track i ve been playing in my sets for years. digital only but so great it definitely needed to get pressed onto wax! i would dj with it using ableton and speed it up a lot so for the vinyl i asked jon (nedza) who ive been a huge fan of since his community recordings releases on grayhound and imperial dub, whether he could speed it up a little bit before we pressed it up. now its 100% perfect: a moroder-esque cosmic stomper thats sure to set any dancefloor alight. the apiento track is another one that s been gestating for a long time first appearing around the time the original e.s.p. 12inch appeared on the wonderful golf channel recordings in 2014. secret circuit gave it a complete overhaul, in fact several complete overhauls, plus some of his signature guitar and has turned the already blissful track into an afro-esque, trippy, beautiful, beautiful piece of music that (imo) is one of his best yet. utterly gorgeous! then there s the boy-girl retro-future duo der kundalini coming from the wonderful lectric sands stable in ny who gave us zoovox. this one s also been hiding on my hard drive way too long! finally relative newcomers konzel (of junto club/optimo music fame) & natural sugars (pardon my french) round off the package just perfectly. the former so distinct that i felt it was a perfect opener for the a side. so, i hope you dig it and keep an eye out for the super limited 12-track cassette too! limited to 300 hand-numbered copies.

scissor & thread ramp up the heat with the debut release by virginias deep house don, dj aakmael. known for his infectious grooves and deep and intricate instrumentation for more than two decades, this four track ep is in no short supply of teased out, peak time, classic deep house. the titular track wastes no time on the a-side with its hard hitting kick and springy bass holding court, while a hypnotic serpentine synth snakes along. the a2, what iz deep house, is a lesson for those who dont know what true deep house is. woozy, edgy chords take the spotlight as a dissociated voice slurs, what is deep house? a relentlessly thick kick, along with sharp as razors hi-hats and snaps, throttle the track into peak time territory. on the flip, sands is an aquatic affair, with its reverb laden pads and piano chord stabs submerging the floor in pelagic atmosphere. the persistent, euphoric bassline bump effortlessly slides its hooks into the listeners ears before a celestial piano melody pierces through the depths. frank & tony take things even deeper with their late night breakaway dub, applying their signature bass line touch and hi-hat shuffle in what may be their best remix to date.

music for dreams is proud to announce the new album by danish legend dub tractor. one of the founding fathers of electronica in denmark in the early 90s, anders remmer has remained a reluc-tant beacon of copenhagen’s scene ever since, with his musical legacy still a work in progress. as well as being a member of future 3, remmer has released material under a number of different aliases, but his most frequent guise dating back to 1994 has been dub tractor. under this name, he gently crafts complex yet warm and organic electronic music that flirts with ambient, dub and idm. with “hello ambient wash”, the first dub tractor album since 2009, remmer explores further the possibilities of dub tractor after the more pop-oriented & shoegaze-flavoured approach of his last album -sorry-. in addition to new material, the second half of “hello ambient wash” presents a ret-rospective of hand-picked tracks from his first three albums on flex records (the label which music for dreams founder kenneth bager ran with ole mortensen from 1994 to 2007). ... bonus info: nils frahm is a fan.

dub-stuy welcomes up and coming producer blind prophet for a conscious dub release in collaboration with russia’s tenor youthman and italy’s numa crew. long island, new york s blind prophet makes his debut on dub-stuy records alongside the vocal talents of tenor youthman , one of the founders of russia’s lion posse sound system. ‘ marijuana burns capitalism ’ is a deep and meditative social statement sure to move the dance and stimulate the heads. on ‘marijuana burns capitalism’, blind prophet lays down a solid riddim, with a deep driving bassline and a bubbly harpsichord skank, for tenor youthman to sing about the liberating properties of hemp in fighting the evils of mass production and capitalism. the result is a simple and effective cut backed by a sparse dub that lets the drums and bass roll out to full effect. the flip side sees florence’s numa crew deliver their own fire for the dance with another straight to the chest dub version that focuses on the bassline and tenor’s unique vocal style. a 12” for the massive that continues the uplifting sound system music dub-stuy is known for.

the second lp in the series air afrique records presents takes us into more electronic fields. mid-tempo house songs mixed with different elements like samples from all over the world or acoustic instruments and some weird electronic sounds create a very unique sound.

first time reissue of the very first dub lp released in nyc, 1975! part of the genesis of the jah life label! first time reissue of kaya dub from 1975, noted as the first ever proper dub lp pressed and released in new york city. the eponymous lp is among the first set of releases on the kaya label. this imprint was the first to showcase the partnership of percy chin and hyman jah life wright as producers and cornerstones of the burgeoning nyc reggae scene of the day. though these tracks originate from jamaica thru a connection with pat jah lloyd francis and have also been released elsewhere, this is none the less a killer selection of dubs from tubby s and randys. in sound and visuals, kaya dub serves as a fantastic snapshot of the music and vibes of roots reggae in the mid 70s, among the best dub lp s of its time.

the house band of bunny ‘striker’ lee was formed in the mid-1970s by some of jamaica’s most prominent and musically expressive session players. the shifting core line-up spun off from the soul syndicate and thus typically featured earl ‘chinna’ smith and tony chin on guitar and bernard ‘touter’ harvey on organ. carlton ‘santa’ was the main drummer, but carlton barrett of the wailers band and ‘benbow’ creary were sometimes featured. most crucially, on bass, aston ‘family man’ barrett shifted to fully fullwood (and occasionally, earl ‘bagga’ walker), until robbie shakespeare took over, becoming the bandleader. the band was responsible for the popular ‘flying cymbal’ style that took jamaica by storm, and you can hear it in abundance on this killer dub set from 1975, its excellent cuts of cornell campbell and johnnie clarke material mixed at king tubby’s studio - a must for all serious fans of dub.

international reggae star alborosie returns with the dub version of his celebrated “freedom & fyah” album from last year titled “freedom in dub”. the distinctive production of these ten newly recorded dub mixes underscore alborosie’s skill and credibility as a master of dub. all tracks are produced and (mostly) played by alborosie and recorded at his shengen studios in kingston, jamaica.
